Description:  On Thursday June 24th, we will be reading American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. Lydia and her son Luca, are living a comfortable middle class life in Mexico when they are suddenly forced to flee due to cartel violence. They find themselves, joining the steady stream of migrants headed for the United States, hoping to escape the cartel's reach. In this gripping portrayal, Jeanine Cummins has given a face to migrants everywhere who flee violence and near-certain death in search of only one thing: a chance at life.

Open to all. Copies of the books will be available at the library. During the summer months we will meet outdoors in our parking lot (weather permitting) so bring a folding chair. For more information and to receive updates regarding our meetings call 926-3682 or email us.

Description:  Summertime and reading is easy. The selection for Thursday, July 29th will be a much lighter read. Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Tyler published a contemporary re-telling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew with her 2016 novel Vinegar Girl. Tyler delivers her usual quirky characters and unconventional family relationships. Kate Battista is outspoken and tactless. Her socially inept, scientist father tries to arrange a marriage of convenience between Kate and his brilliant lab assistant whose visa is about to expire. “He must think she was of no value; she was nothing but a bargaining chip in his single-minded quest for a scientific miracle.”

In her version, Tyler produces a more politically correct comedy of manners. According to NPR, Tyler created a “fizzy cocktail of a romantic comedy, far more sweet than acidic, about finding a mate who appreciates you for your idiosyncratic, principled self – no taming necessary.”

Open to all. Copies of the books will be available at the library. During the summer months we will meet outdoors in our parking lot  so bring a folding chair. For more information and to receive updates regarding our meetings call 926-3682 or email us.
